About me
Looking at photographs is something I've always been interested in. That's the story behind me becoming a photographer. My journey began with a fascination for images, evolving into a passion for capturing moments and places in a way that speaks. I find myself bored by photographs and photographers who chase the spectacular. A photograph is more than that, and I'm uninterested in doing something that's been done a thousand times over. I've always enjoyed the photography of people like Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, and Robert Adams.
I have been taking pictures for over 50 years, having used many types of 35mm, medium format, and large format film cameras. More recently, I have been shooting weddings professionally for 10 years. I have self-published a number of books on black and white photography, street photography, color film photography, and landscape photography. Some titles include "The Vernacular of Landscape", "Time and Space", "The Nature Within", "Conversations Without Color", and "This Life Unseen".
Before I take a photograph, I always try to gain a level of understanding for the place, the person, or the time.
My Style
I consider myself to be a straight photographer believing that seeing something as it is, is a more noble pursuit than relying on manipulation and extensive editing.
A great deal of my work comes from places where not much is happening. In my home town I've walked days on end without even crossing paths with a single person. As a result, I've had to dig deeper often taking photographs that encourage the viewer to consider things and places that would normally go overlooked.
Besides photography, I am also a teacher, a technologist, and an avid radio operator spending some of my time communicating to friends all over the world via ham radio satellites. This helps me not only to see the world differently, but to develop better communication skills...
